PORTRAYAL OF WOMEN IN MEDIA

As we see these days, women are climbing huge steps of success be it in any field, we find women excelling it. But the question is- “Are women getting the same respect in the society” (not professionally)? In olden times, women were called and treated like “Laxmi” (a Hindu goddess), they were worshipped during festive days with due respect and in an actual sense. But, today it hurts to say and realize that WOMEN ARE NOW-A-DAYS PERCEIVED TO BE MERE SEX OBJECTS (eye candy) and the reason behind this is the media- the way we find actresses more in western costumes and bikini than in saris and salwars.

Movies, or for that matter media in general, are often said to be the reflection of the society. Or at least that’s what majority of people in India consciously or unconsciously tend to believe. While it’s arguable whether the media truly reflects the society or not, there’s no doubt that media has a big sociocultural influence on the society.

The way women are shown in movies these days is hardly different than those before a decade or a few. Women have been shown to consider being an ideal homemaker as the goal of their life. Leaving few exceptions, movies of recent times have hardly shown an ‘ideal woman’ doing anything but being a housewife. Even in those movies where a woman is shown to have more decision power in hand than her husband, the wife is almost always portrayed in bad light.

As far as showing women in advertisements is concerned, things seem to have only worsened over time. In most of the advertisements, a woman is either washing clothes and/or utensils, cooking, serving food to family members or trying to make her husband feel better who’s at that time reading a newspaper or suffering from cold. A woman does all this even when she has headache or backache. These advertisements arguably encourage sexism. They reinforce the old belief that a woman is supposed to forgo her own comfort and keep on doing household chores without getting tired.

The same has remained true for the soap operas of earlier times and of recent times. While in many of these soaps, a woman has more decision power than their male counterparts, it’s very difficult to come across such families in real life. Moreover, those women who wear modern clothes and appear very confident more often than not have bad intentions than their conservative and not-so-modern counterparts.

I recently came across this: ‘The media should refrain from portraying women as commodities and sex objects.’ The media still portrays women as objects showing who in certain way can catch the attraction of people. It’s very amusing to see a woman in advertisements for products like cement.

A woman holds utmost importance in the Indian culture and household. It is the sensationalism by the media that women today are not receiving the much needed aid from their families. It is high time we portrayed women as progressive yet positive, especially in daily soaps.

Diverting abit from the main topic, we see that girls are paid more than Rs. 1500 for sales promotion and launching events, but boys in that matter are only paid Rs. 500- 800. As we have know director Madhur Bhandarkar’s movie – FASHION is based on reality, we have an episode in there where Priyanka Chopra is paid money for just attending a party, also an episode where a photographer asks Mugda Godse to show her thighs by siding her clothes.

In a talk show known as koffee with Karan, actress Hema Malini reveals that once a director tried to offend her by asking her to not pin up her sari so that her sari’s pallu falls off her shoulder and gives it a sensuous look, but she didn’t agree to give such a shot.

It is very famously said that movies in the south don’t become hit and that the theatres go empty if there is no romance, sex scene in it. As we know many actresses these days are going for silicon breast implant surgery so that they can use it for getting more roles. Why is the whole world so sex oriented? Are women only mere objects according to the society?

How easily we start cursing women for wearing bold clothes and giving sex scenes on screen, but have we ever given it a thought as in why are they doing this? What’s the need? The answer could only be “because there is a demand for it”… but then why curse someone doing such things when you yourself are asking her to get indulged into it?

THREAT TO INDIAN CULTURE

It’s not new to see girls and boys of modern times adapting to the western dress code of jeans and we have become that open minded to even see them wearing it. In fact, Indian culture of wearing salwar suits, sherwanis , sarees , etc by college going students have diminished to such a great extent that people stare at them with a weird look if by chance they wear traditional outfits.

Threat in means of clothes is not the only issue unfortunately. College festivals, dance shows on television, bollywood movies give more emphasis on western forms of entertainment than the Indian traditional music , dance and theatre. The much larger issue than this is the costumes worn by them, which are so revealing that it sometimes makes us quote “why they even had to wear what they are wearing?” Just for high TRP rates, the world is growing so sex- oriented. This is definitely not our culture.

In ancient times and even today we hear our elders telling us “a lady’s vital jewellery is her timidity”, so then where is it today? Indian languages are not valued as much as English is on the professional front. I remember my parents telling me that they never even dared to look into the eyes of their elders. But the youths of today, not only dare to do this but even raise their hands and voice with abusive language. It is a real sad sight to see this kind of change.

Yes! India is now included in the list of developed nations but what’s so much in it to get happy about when we have lost our culture and tradition in the process? I’ m sorry but I don’t consider India as “developed”, I would rather consider it as “lost and mesmerized”. What about you?

THE INFLICTION

I don't know who he is but I do know one thing- he looks weird and creepy. I want my mummy. I'm just walking to school. I'm in fourth grade and I'm 10. Mummy and daddy forgot I had school today. But it's ok, they are always busy talking- ‘talking about a website and a shoot.’ There’s no one out, it’s actually too early to walk anywhere. I live 3kms away. I don't care if I have to walk because it’s fun. The wind is nice, the grass smells good and even the sun isn’t out yet.

I hear someone calling “Hey!!!” Should I respond? Mummy says it’s not nice to ignore people. Oh my God! It's that creepy looking man. Aahhh he has a kitten in his car. “It's so cute. I want to pet it. Can I?”
“Yes, why not?” he said “I’m a very nice man and I love children with brown eyes and black hair. Come, come along, I will give you a candy too.”
“But....Oh you could drive me to school and please give me the candy now uncle” I get into the car then. “This kitty is really very cute, I’m loving being with it uncle”.
“Hmm”
As he is driving along the way I realize it’s not the usual road that goes to my school- “My school is the other way uncle.” He stays quite. “ohhh may be it’s the shortcut, right?” Yet no answer from him. I engage playing with the kitten. After a while as I open up the candy looking out of the window in between “This isn't even near my school. Why are you getting mad? And this candy is stale.”
“Hmm…”
“Can you drop me off now please? PLEASE.”
“Shut up… stop yelling”
“Why did you hit me? Where are you taking me?

He halted the car at a lonely street and started forcing upon me. “No, Stop touching me! STOP IT! STOP IT! I want to go back to mummy!
He got out of car and came next to my seat door, opened it, pulled me out and started pushing me back into the car but this time at the back seat of the car. “Let me go, I don't want to go in there. No! No! No! Stop it please.... No! Stop touching me there. Stop! It hurts!!! IT HURTS!”
“If you don’t stop screaming I would cut you into pieces… there is no one here to listen to your screeching.”
“Get off me, you cruel scoundrel!!! It’s bleeding. You have a daughter of my age you said, would you do this to her too?”

He went loose, left my hands, he got off me, went numb and busted into tears. I didn’t wait to see his expressions, just took a chance and somehow managed to run away with heavy and painful lower body.

I was lucky enough to find a PCO nearby at a motel. I telephoned my mummy
“Hello”
“Hello…. Hello mummy can you hear me? Mummy it’s me- Sarah.”
“Yes baby I can hear you…speak dear”
“Mummy I was caught by a creepy man. He was taking me somewhere but I managed to run out from him after an hour of  his inappropriate  behavior. Please come soon mummy to fetch me.”

As I was about to tell her the location, the telephone disconnected. I tried to redial the number but it kept on saying “switched off.” I asked the receptionist to tell me the direction for the washroom. The washroom was located at a distance in the same wing; I had to pass through several rooms in the same passage. As I was heading towards the washroom, I accidentally happened to hear a voice- a voice that was telling
“James … James we have to leave and find Sarah, she has been through a mess. I don’t know where she is but we need to find her. Let’s go James, c’mon…”
It was my mummy’s voice. I was very happy and relieved. I tried to find out from where and which room the voice was knocking out.

Suddenly a sound of a slap and “you go if you want to… I don’t care!!! For me my work is more important than your stupid daughter.”

I tried peeping in the room through the key hole; couldn’t see my mum dad, but I saw a camera, two- three people roaming here and there and…. And a small girl of my age with a man on the bed…

I was broken, completely broken…. Now I never wanted to go back to my mum dad. I wanted to run away from them, forever. I couldn’t even imagine that my mum dad would be involved in all this- the thing that was a deadly feeling and an experience for me.  Even that creepy man was one of the people who were working with my mum dad itself. I slept in the benches of church that night. In the morning, the mother of the church comes up to me, I tell her the whole story, and she admits me in her convent. After a month, the news revealed that my mum dad are arrested for drug dealing and human trafficking. All the girls that forcefully worked for my mum dad’s organization were set free. I found my way and became a nun. Now the question is “would these girls find a respectful way of life?”

Now I have grown young and I have become a nun.  It was very hard for me to spend these fearful years. I missed my mum dad too, but the very next moment I developed a heavy hatred for them. I cried when I heard the arrest news of my mum dad, but deep in my heart I attained peace.

This was the secret I hid from all, even my parents. Only the mother of the church, my lord, and I knew this. But I never told the mother that the arrested people were my mum dad themselves.

I then realized that – ‘YOU  CAN  LOSE  TRUST  AND  YET  LIVE  YOUR  LIFE,  BUT ALWAYS  LET  THE  HOPE  GLEAM  IN  YOUR  HEART  FOREVER.’

“IF IT WAS MY WORLD….”

“If it was my world, we would not strive to earn money, all that we would earn, would be good deeds”, this is what I keep dreaming about day and night. It was just a night before yesterday where I saw a weird but an interesting dream. It started with a big noise, just as if a blast had taken place--

Boom!! Dashed a meteoroid to the planet Earth and sparks of its friction burnt the trees around. Animals and the environment were into ashes. The land became barren and till kilometers away not a living thing was found, everything got ruined. But suddenly, just as the parachute lands on ground, two weird looking beings, grounded. Both looked different but slightly matched each other, the similarity being their body structure- brunette skin tone, loads of hair on their bodies, nude, single pair of eyes, hands, legs, ears, etc. both wondering who they were and where they were. Their rolling eyes stared at each other from head to toe and to the barren land around them. Suddenly they get the answers to all their questions in a form of a humble toned voice and an opaque structure, the Creator, the one who had all the magical powers. They were the 1st human beings on Earth named Adam and Eve.

No No!!! They were not the same Adam and Eve that people have heard about, they were different. They were the pure dark chocolate-made Adam and Eve and even the Earth they landed on was the chocolate world, where everything was made out of chocolate. This chocolate world had colored chocolates, as in, blue chocolate skies, grey chocolate stars, white chocolate moon, green chocolate trees, and yellow chocolate fire, all possessing the same functions that they did in the actual world but yet could be eaten. When Adam and Eve were hungry, they ate anything randomly, be it any part of the world and sometimes, even ate their own fingers, which could be redeveloped according to their will.

Soon the barren land too, grew up into tasty chocolate land with blooming trees. Adam and Eve built their small hut in which they lived, made out of chocolate sticks and grass. They lived in peace until monsoon arrived. Although the monsoon too, was of chocolate, its function was the same as the rain-water does in real world. It rained cats and dogs in monsoon and the chocolate world melted. Different colored chocolates melted and mixed with each other forming different hues. When Adam and Eve melted and when their melted body chocolates mixed with each other it would give birth to their children, this was how they reproduced. The same process was with all the living beings that reproduced.

When it was the winter season, everything in the world froze including the humans; this was a time when the world was no more a happy-go-lucky world. Things came on a standstill. Monsoon was when birds, animals and humans reproduced and winter was the season of death. Beings that could not survive the freezing cold, died. The world didn’t survive on money, all they had to earn was good deeds and their Creator would give them something that they asked for once in a week. This day was the Sabbath, seventh day of the week.

Once when Adam had to ask something from Creator on Sabbath, he asked him his life span and when the Creator answered him, suddenly, the cloud covered the sun, birds stopped chirping, animals stopped gazing, and everything paused. The answer was “the whole world would die if Adam did any five wrong deeds.” This was because he was the 1st person to represent the human race, in other words, the “leader” and according to the Creator, if the leader himself made mistakes, other things would go hay wire. On counting, Adam had till now done two wrong deeds. Firstly, Adam treated himself as if he was the “too be” Creator, and bossed everyone on Earth. Secondly, he dared to ask Creator a question like he did.

Days were going hard ever since the world knew this. But still Adam did not believe on what Creator told him and went on with his superiority. This was his third mistake, he dint believe on Creator’s words.

When Eve tried to explain that what he was doing was wrong he slapped her, his fourth mistake. The world started losing its colors, tress were dying day by day, everything around was getting rotten and water lessened as time passed but yet Adam was only getting ruder and ruder day by day. He conveyed to the Creator that he could not be destroyed and threatened him. On acknowledging this, the Creator got red and came as a cyclone and vanished everything from Earth. Not a drop of water around, no air to breathe in and Adam was left all alone to survive with hungry insects feeding on his body while he was still alive…

That day, I woke up with a start; thinking about my dream… was not too satisfied with the cruel conclusion of my dream. But, when I gave it a thought, I found it right… ever since I saw the dream; I started relating myself to Adam. I started believing that if I don’t kill my evil ego, if I posses unnecessary pride, if I get violent, if I don’t have faith on my Creator- the Lord our god and ever if I question him, I would be punished just like Adam was and thereafter my life was heaven and in peace. I realized, life is worth living but only if you follow some strict disciplinary rules, or else, you would get ruined… Think about it…

LOVE UNFORGOTTEN

If I was the SUN
You could be the RAIN,
If I was BLOOD
You could be the VEIN,

If I was MUSIC
You could be the STRING,
If I became YOU
Couldn’t u be ME?

Could u understand
My heart touched the BRIM,
You left me and
I went DIM....
